The Maldives encapsulates sheer tropical bliss in each of its low-lying coral islands.  Located off the coast of India and Sri Lanka, this string of islands group into 26 natural atolls in the Indian Ocean.

These ancient coral reefs grew up on the edges of towering volcanoes which have long since sunk into the ocean, leaving behind the beautiful coral islands that lie there today.

Malé is the quaint and charming capital city of the Maldives.  The island itself is about 2km long and 1km wide with a population of about 80,000 people.  Mosques and markets decorate the small streets as well as shops selling the local handicraft.  Malé is also home to a whale submarine, national museum, local fish market and much more.

Shopping
Malé is the best place to go for shopping with most souvenir shops located on the northern end of Candace Magus.  The local market sells a variety of local produce including local vegetables, fruits and yams, packets of sweetmeat, nuts and breadfruit chips as well as bottles of homemade sweets.

Dining
Malé has the widest variety of local and international restaurants.  The resorts own all restaurants on resort islands.  The food is international with everything except seafood imported.

Nightlife
The nightlife in the Maldives is very laidback with just a few informal discos at the resorts and bar areas sometimes offering live traditional or Western music.  Beach parties and barbecues are also popular.
