PERU

Peru is the third largest country in South America, stretching from the parched desert on the Pacific coastline to the lush Amazonian rainforest to the east. The sheer variety of landscapes in the country is quite staggering, encompassing soaring mountain ranges and vast tropical jungle, with beautiful beaches and picturesque islands along the coastline.

This wondrous geography gave rise to ancient empires, origins of which can be traced back thousands of years. As one of the birthplaces of civilisation, Peru has an extremely rich cultural history and archaeological heritage, which document the development of early society from early Palaeolithic villages to the magnificent cities of the Incan empire.

The most popular of these historical marvels is the 'Lost City of the Incas' Machu Picchu. Over half of all visits to Peru include a visit to this ancient city, and with its dramatic setting and magnificent old structures, it is easy to see why. Of course, the country has plenty of other heritage sites of equal beauty and grandeur, including the ancient Inca capital of Cuzco and the mysterious Nazca Lines.

For more active pursuits, the dramatic Peruvian landscape lends itself to a wide variety of sports and activities. From skiing on the snowy peaks of the Andes to white water rafting along the Amazon River to sand boarding on the desert dunes, the opportunities for adventure are virtually endless. Various tours can take travellers through rainforests overflowing with wildlife to take in the views of some of the most spectacular landscapes on Earth.

Within all this natural beauty and historic splendour lie cosmopolitan cities with charming colonial architecture, world-class restaurants and booming bars and nightclubs.

Explore Inca Ruins:
The most popular and unique tourist attraction in Peru is a visit to the Inca ruins at Machu Picchu, the most visited site in all of South America. Set high in the mountains, the dramatic setting of this exquisitely preserved city attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. The ancient capital of the Inca Empire, Cuzco, is the base for most trips to Machu Picchu, and the ruins of the Inca fortresses in the towns of Ollantaytambo and Pisac are worth a visit as well.

Shop at the traditional Markets:
The Andean town of Pisac just short car ride from Cuzco, and its Sunday market is perhaps the finest handcraft market in the country. Natives from all over come in their traditional, colourful clothing to flog everything from musical instruments to Alpaca wool sweaters.

Mountain Trekking:
Hiking along the Inca trail is among the top things to do in Peru, and for good reason. Adventurers are rewarded with stunning views of snow-capped mountains, volcanic craters and glorious Inca ruins along the way. There are climbs to suit every skill level which can take anywhere from two days to a week to complete.

Enjoy the Beach:

Along the coast North of Lima lie some of the best beaches in the country. Not only ideal for swimming and sunbathing, these beaches are also known for churning up some world-class waves providing world-class surfing conditions.

Explore the Amazon Jungle:

An expedition through the Amazon rainforest is a fantastic way to discover some of the fascinating wildlife and spectacular surroundings of the Peruvian jungle. From Cuzco, busses descend down the eastern slopes of the Andes to the Manu National Park and boat tours can take travellers along the mighty Amazon River.
