Jamaica

Jamaica is surely one of the Caribbean’s most iconic destinations. The scenery offers everything from fish-filled coral reefs and white-sand beaches to breathtaking waterfalls and cloud-shrouded rainforests.

The music is infectious, and the people represent one of the most diverse populations in the Caribbean, drawing from African, Chinese, Indian, British and German heritage. Jamaica is the Caribbean’s third largest island with six main tourist regions Montego Bay, Negril, Mandeville and The South Coast, Kingston, Port Antonio and Ocho Rios.

There is something for everyone here. Ocho Rios is a prime port for cruise ships- boasting a succession of beautiful bays and beaches. Most notable are Runaway Bay, and Discovery Bay. The Dunn’s River Falls lies just inland and may seem familiar to some as it is one of Jamaica’s most photographed attractions.

If watersports is your thing than Montego Bay is where you should stay. This place is a mecca for sailing, scuba diving, jet skiing, parasailing, sport fishing and glass-bottom boat excursions.

While Gloucester Avenue (dubbed the Hip Strip) is where you can shop till you drop in the summer sun. This popular district is lined with duty-free shops, souvenir arcades, restaurants and bars.

Perched on limestone bluffs, Negril’s West End is home to numerous small resorts snuggled into the craggy cliffs- this area is key for those looking to relax and unwind in a quiet Caribbean environment.

Night life in Jamaica has great scope and range, from subdued reggae music to loud and proud street dances. There is a touch of Jamaica to be had for all ages. Torch-lit limbo dancers and fire-eaters are a sight to be seen on most street corners while neon nightclubs stay open till as late as they like!

Jamaica is an amazing island get-away that you really have to see to believe!

Things to do

Port Royal Museum in Kingston
This is an extremely interesting museum that documents Jamaica’s ancient capital that was submerged undersea following an earthquake in 1692. A perfect way to find out about the origins of this beautiful island.

Ocean Views
The ocean is perhaps one of the most perfect things about Jamaica and there’s a lot of it to take in. Get the best views from Montego Bay- or venture to Ocho Rios and take in the dolphins as well at the Dolphin Cove.

Hike to Blue Mountains
This amazing trail leads the way to an astonishing view of over 7,000 ft. There are over 800 plant species awaiting you along the journey as well as 200 species of birds. The perfect hide-out for an ornithologist!

Shopping
Local produce is the highlight of shopping in Jamaica. From woodcarvings to oil paintings and silk screenings to hand-loomed fabrics- there are many different mementos to be nabbed up and flown home. Keep your eye out for the custom made rugs and china from the 17th century ruins of Port Royal.
